Here comes a new version of Mussorgsky, the metadata editor and album art downloader for maemo.
What is new?
- Fixed bug #8912, crash editing some songs (thanks to the reporter and patient users)
- Added support for internationalization (thanks to this tutorial and few bits of code from ReSiStance)
- Translations to Spanish, French (Eric Le Roux), German (Marius Vollmer), Finnish (Kimmo Hämälainen), Galician (Xabier Calvar) and more to come…
- Fixed the album art path calculation, now albums with special characters in the name are set correctly and appear in the media player
- Support for WMA, OGG and FLAC (the merits go to mutagen).
- A brand new cool icon, more maemo style, thanks to Urho Konttori:
Enjoy and as usual, feedback is welcome. We have a bugzilla component (under Extras/Mussorgsky) to report issues.
By the way, If you have a project in python and wonder how to add i18n, give a change to this wiki page: how to internationalize python apps in maemo; i tried to write there as clearly and simple as possible how to do it.

The new version doesn’t start, it crashs after the launching
@alextootchie try typing “mussorgsky” in a terminal and check the error. if it is about “gtk.HILDON_SIZE_FINGER_HEIGHT” or similar, is because you have an old version of the python bindings. an apt-get update/upgrade should fix it.
if it is a different error, please provide some extra info! thanks!
Is this useful?

I am having exactly same issue as alextootchie.
Hi, i’ve just updated the app and i’m experiencing the same glib related problem.
btw, if you want italian translation i’d glad to help
@alextoochie: yes that is very useful. It doesn’t find the glib module. It can be an undeclared dependency in the mussorgsky package. I am not sure which package installs glib… could you please try “apt-get install python-gtk2 python-gobject”?
thanks, now the app works
Hi, I had the same problem (missing dependency). Apparently the package should be dependent on python-gobject, in my case apt-get install python-gobject helped. Looking forward to test Mussorgky more!
Hi there,
I’ve just installed mussorgsky on my N900 and think it’s awesome. Only trouble is, it will not save the artwork when you search and choose it.
Searched all the forums and doesn’t seem to be anything there on this issue.
Thanks
@Jayant, you can always report the problem in bugzilla: bugs.maemo.org (component Extras/Mussorgsky). It is much better to discuss the problem and gather the information than blog comments. Please check before reporting if your memory card is full, or your memory card is in read-only mode.
thanks @flyskyhigh… The problem is that mussorgsky depends on python2.5-gobject (deprecated) instead of python-gobject. The problem is already fixed in the repositories.
I apt-get the python update so I have it working but it appears that it doesn’t remember any changes made to any manually found covers for albums on my sd card
Any ideas?
@Jayant, @ericj23, you are right, there is a bug and the album art is not saved in the right location. I am releasing a new version (0.5.1) with the fix right away. Thanks for your feedback!
installing python-gobject solved the problem for me too.
thanks, great app!
Upgrade worked fine, without any problems.
Thanks for the great app!
@dz015
Thanks. Brilliant work!
Thanks for the fix – amamzingly useful app making my n900 the best audio player
I am so grateful for your hard work
Still can’t open the app . I tried :
apt-get install python-gtk2 python2.5-object . Now the log :
Reading package lists..Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information… Done
python-gtk2 is already the newest version.
python-gtk2 set to manally installed.
E: Couldn’t find package python2.5-object
It is python2.5-gobject… and it should be fixed with the latest version in the repositories!
I did do that but still the same problem . did uninstall and reinstall it one more time with the same results . Thx anyway . Don’t need to bother you. Though, I love this app, and it’s one of the apps that aren’t useless in the repositories. Thx for your effort. it’s extremely appreciated .
Hi im trying to change the artist in some WMAs but when i go to the media player its everithing as before and no changes appear i will appreciate some help here!!
P.S. it is possible to add support fo m4a in the future?
Thanks for a great app!
Could you put the option to the program that it would first look for folder.jpg or cover.jpg from the album folder? Or that I could manually link an image file to an album? I happen to have much better scans in my album folders than what you can find from the internet so I’d like to be able to use them. Thanks!
Great app, but…
It worked earlier, but now it crashes just like described earlier. When I tried to apt-get install python2.5-object, i received an error: Couldn’t find package….
Any help please?
Have you upgrade to PR1.2? Probably some changes in the python packages or the hildon bindings? didn’t have time to test it yet.
If it is failing for you, open a terminal and simply run “mussorgsky”. It should show some error message.
Thanks for the great app. It’s working great, with some minor issues.
When entering metadata, moving to next track will crash the program. Not a huge deal, I can just return to the list and choose the next song.
Usually when looking at the list of tracks missing data, the tracks I’ve fixed will disappear. However, after I’ve entered maybe 20-30 tracks, the fixed tracks won’t disappear from the list, but remain there.
I’m running PR1.2 and the latest version of MussOrgsky.
The cover art detector could really use some fixes, as it can miss some fairly obvious and popular covers. I suppose that’s partly Bing’s fault, but still, some things can be done.
First: can you bypass the safe search filter? I’d like to get a cover for Cure’s Pornography, but in safe search mode Bing won’t produce any results with the word Pornography.
Second: the ability to provide a direct url would be welcome. I think it would be fairly simple UI-wise, too – if user enters something beginning with http:// in the search field, consider it an URL and fetch it. Not the smoothest option, but it would work, and something like this is still mostly used by power users anyway. You’ll have plenty of time to figure out a smooth interface before you get to 1.0 =)
In any case, MussOrgsky has been a real life-saver, as my music collection is normally maintained in iTunes, causing a bit of a trouble when moving the stuff to N900.
@Mikko: thanks for the suggestions. The crash is obviously a bug (please start mussorgsky from a terminal and open a bug in bugzilla with the output); same with the 20-30 track edition.
Bypassing the safe search filter should be easy, let see if the results (in general) improve. Providing the URL and choosing a file from the file system are probably the next features to add in the program.
Great app, thanks. However, I have a little issue: when you are searching for classical music, there are tons of recordings of the same piece, but Mussorgksy shows only five images. I’m trying to narrow down the search by adding more info like the conductor’s name, the orchestra, etc, but it’s still the case that “my” image is further down the line of images that bing finds. Some sort of “more” button would be really helpful.
hi there mussorgsky is not downloading albums art any more with pr1.3 please check the problem
Hello
I recently heard of this great app, however it seems a bit too late
Whenever I try to use it, it pulls only blank cover art, unable to fetch correct the correct cover art
Do you have an idea why this is happening? and is development still active for this app?
Regard
Hi, I’ve got the same problem as the last person who left a comment, whenever I make a search for the album art, it never comes up with anything apart from just the little record thumbnail.
I whiped my N900 a few days ago, erased all the files but kept all the programs installed. I put new music on my N900, some came up with albumwork already from my PC, but some didn’t.
I tried Mussorgsky, which used to work without any problem, but for some reason now, after cleaning on my memory card it’s not letting me seach for anything anymore.
Could you please assist? If u need any additional info, just let me know.
Thanx, Mau
